While I am still taking my time reviewing Tim Martin’s series on Colossians (which can be found at TruthInLiving.org), this past Saturday, 2/1, we concluded our study through the Book of Colossians at The Blue Point Bible Church. Prayerfully, you had opportunity to read through Colossians and read our reviews that were posted (which I will post below for your further review). We summed up Colossians 1-3:4 to be highlighting the preeminence of Christ before all things and He to whom all things pointed, thus the “creation context” found in chapter 1. In his sermon series, Tim Martin goes to great lengths to demonstrate the picture of a “new creation”, “new exodus”, and a new “peace covenant” as all demonstrating the unveiling of the “mystery” (cf. Colossians 1:27; Acts 10:11-15, 34-45; Revelation 10:1-11), which in substance is understood to be the bringing in of the nations, all creation, into relationship with God through the blood of Jesus Christ (cf. Colossians 1:14, 20, 23).

Colossians chapters 3-4 bring us into talking about application of being this “new creation”. In those putting off the “old man” (identity under the Old Covenant or idolatrous practices of the nations) and putting on the “new man” (Col. 3:9-10), we find God’s elect. We emphasized asking oneself, “How can I apply this” as reading through Colossians 3:5 – 4:6. And lastly, we concluded our study by talking through the importance of the salutations found at the end (and sometimes the beginning) of the New Testament letters – seeing the importance and calling of the average people in the church and details that beckon us to pay attention to “audience relevance”.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and SPIRITUAL SONGS, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Colossians 3:16)”.
